Zeus is known as the king of all gods and humans, lord of the sky, the rain god, and has many more titles. Zeus was the son of Cronus, god of time and king of the titans, and Rhea. He was also the brother of Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera. Cronus ate his children because he was told that someday one of his children would dethrone him. Rhea hid Zeus in a cave in Crete and was protected until he grew up. When he was grown, he led a war to force Cronus from his power. When he succeeded, he forced Cronus to spit out his siblings and Zeus led them into battle to stop all the other Titans from ruling the universe. Then he became the ruler of the gods and he watched over humanity and nature from his city on Mount Olympus. Humanity looked at Zeus as if he was their actual father, that is why people thought when something good happened to them, that is because they did something to please Zeus or if something bad happened, then they did something to anger Zeus. When he became ruler, he created and enforced laws to ensure order among all the gods. Zeus is known as the god to have a thunderbolt as a weapon and to be able to shape himself into any living creature. Zeus was married to Hera, however he had many affairs with women who were mortal and immortal. Some of the women were names were Europa, Danae, Io, Themis and many more. Zeus had tens of children from all the women he cheated with. Not all the women wanted to be with Zeus at first, so he turned into himself into several types of animals to seduce them.

Zeus is one of the most popular gods in Greek Mythology. Zeus has influenced many people today and is seen in pop culture all around us. A lot of the literature Zeus has appeared in is usually Greek Mythology but Zeus has also appeared in books other than just Mythology. Zeus appears in the trilogy “Chronicles of Chaos” by John C. Wright, Zeus is portrayed as Lord Terminus a character who dies and gives commands to the orphans of chaos. Zeus has also appeared in the comic book series “Batman” as a former teacher believes himself to be the reincarnation of Zeus. Zeus’ influence is seen all over the world we live in today. Zeus is seen in popular movies, comics, literature, television, and video games. Zeus appears in the movie “Clash of the Titans” (2012) as portrayed by the actor Liam Neeson. Zeus is also in the video game “God of War” by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is obvious that Zeus was one of the most popular Greek Gods during the times the Greeks worshipped Zeus and it is obvious today that Zeus is in our popular culture and is still very relevant in today’s world. A character as powerful as Zeus cannot ever be forgotten in the past and should still be built upon and referenced even today.

Olympia / Zeus by Phidias / Bertuch .. Illustration. Encyclopædia Britannica ImageQuest. Web. 9 Sep 2015.

Phidias was the artistic director of the construction of the Parthenon, he created a lot of the religious pictures that were in the temple and probably designed its overall structure. It is said that Phidias alone has seen what the Gods look like and he was the one who showed mankind what they looked like. Not a lot is known about his life but when Pericles rose to power in 449 he created a fantastic building program in Athens he was put in charge of all the artwork. Phidias has had many famous works of art, he built statues that were gigantic and broke size records for his time. He also made a statue that is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World; this statue stood at about 42 feet and took up the entire height of the temple. The last part of Phidias’ life is still a mystery. Pericles’ enemies accused Phidias of stealing gold from the statue of Athena Parthenos in 432 but later found innocent. They then accused him of impiety and he was thrown into jail. It was thought for a long time that he died in prison but it has recently been brought up that he may have been exiled to the island of Elis where he made a work of the “Olympian Zeus”. Most of the sculptures that were in the Parthenon are now in a British museum with most being attributed to him and his assistants but not for certain. Phidias gives a perfect example of what people believed distinguished Greek art in the later 5th and 4th centuries. Phidias made sure that the Gods were portrayed in perfect ways. When he sculpted them he usually gave them things that would put then above humans, such as; gold, perfect bodies, size, ivory, etc. making sure that the people who were looking at this sculpture or painting know that the Gods were in power.
