Characterizing and Identifying (Tanner Smith)
Hermes was and is one of the most famous Olympians. He was the son of Zeus and Maia, the daughter of Atlas. Hermes was a popular god, and didn’t have many enemies. He was often shown as a young, clean-shaven boy. He was an intelligent god, probably the most intelligent. He was a graceful and fast Olympian and he is usually shown wearing winged sandals, a winged hat, while holding a caduceus. Hermes was Zeus’ personal messenger in the myths. He was really smart and knew every thought of Zeus. Hermes biggest weakness is his curiosity. He was the patron of travel and commerce, thievery, animal husbandry, roads, hospitality, heralds, athletic contest, gymnasiums, astronomy, and astrology. He also had the role of leading dead souls to the underworld, Hades. His Roman name was Mercury. Some of the most famous myths of Hermes are the theft of Apollo’s cattle and the slaying of Argus, the one hundred eyed giant. He invented two of the most famous and important instruments of Greece in these myths. In the theft of Apollo’s cattle, Hermes invented the lyre to soothe Apollo. He invented the Pan Pipe to put Argus to sleep so he could kill the monster. Hermes has the ability to fly and deliver messages anywhere in the world. Hermes has these abilities because of his winged sandals. Hermes is the best-known Greek god, and the most apparent in their mythology. (Hermes, Theoi; Hamilton pg. 30-31)
